Dannel Malloy has won the election for governor, and there will be no statewide recount, Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz announced this afternoon.
Bysiewicz said unofficial election results showed Malloy, the Democrat, defeated his Republican opponent, Tom Foley, by 3,103 votes out of more than 1 million cast, above the threshold of 2,000 or fewer that would trigger an automatic recount.
A recount is required when the margin between candidates is less than one half of 1 percent of the total vote.

Nancy Wyman, the state comptroller, won the lieutenant governor's job and will preside over the state Senate.
This morning, Malloy had anticipated Bysiewicz's announcement.
"After a long night I am confident that when the secretary of the state certifies the results of the election Nancy Wyman and I will be declared the winners, and that a recount will not be necessary," he said in a statement released by his campaign.
Tom Foley, speaking to reporters at his campaign headquarters in Stamford this afternoon, said he was not conceding.
"We see ourselves as up less than 2,000 votes," Foley said, citing the campaign's internal numbers.
He said his campaign had been in touch with Bysiewicz's office and plans to go over her office's numbers, town by town, with their numbers to identify any discrepancies. "We need to see whether her numbers are right or our numbers are right," he said.
He said that he and his campaign did not want to hold up a decision in the race but that "the future of Connecticut is at stake."
He said he had not been in touch with Malloy today.
Results in the hotly contest governor's race were delayed Tuesday night when a judge ordered a two-hour extension of voting at some sites in Bridgeport, and other municipalities were still counting votes.
Asked about Bridgeport, Foley said today, "It may not be a significant number" of people who voted after 8 p.m."
The extension was ordered by a Superior Court judge after a shortage of ballots prevented some from voting.
The handcounting of photocopied ballots in Bridgeport finished by 7:15 a.m., bringing the total number of votes for Malloy in the city to 19,148 and for Foley to 6,502, said a woman who is not a city elections official in the city's voter registrar's office. The count is preliminary, she said.
